Koala Digital recently hosted a hands-on SEO workshop designed to help businesses better understand and apply search engine optimisation strategies. Carla was joined by three aspiring companies: Spectrum – Merchandising, Hotel Lock and Safe and the delicious SB Cake Atelier.

Each company joined the SEO workshop to learn the benefits of SEO and how to apply it in a practical way to drive traffic to their site.

So here’s how it went…

Why SEO Matters for Your Business

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is essential for businesses that need to grow their organic website traffic and build long-term visibility without relying on paid ads. SEO can also help customers find a business online while building trust and credibility within search engine results.

Many businesses, especially small businesses, can struggle with SEO because it feels technical or overwhelming. However, in Koala Digital’s SEO workshop, Carla broke it down into manageable chunks, covering both on-page SEO and off-page SEO, making it digestible for beginners.

SEO is incredibly important, especially for small and growing businesses, which are competing in crowded markets for top of Google. Upkeeping a website’s SEO can be the difference between the phone ringing and silence.

An Overview of the SEO Workshop Experience

The SEO workshop was divided into two sessions, one going through on-page SEO and social media, and the next covered everything about backlinks and acted as a refresher.

With games such as “each person guessing what company they are from” through keywords, the SEO workshop transformed the daunting subject of SEO into a hands-on, practical session tailored to each individual.

The two sessions allowed for a deeper understanding and focus on each SEO topic, ensuring there was ample time for questions and discussion throughout the workshop.

The collaborative small group learning created a relaxed environment and allowed for the tools to be used on their own websites rather than generic examples.

With a break in between each session and snacks and lunch provided, the SEO workshop maintained an engaging atmosphere for all attendees while also offering valuable opportunities for small business owners to connect and socialise.

So, What Were the SEO Topics Covered During the SEO Workshop?

The SEO workshop covered 4 main topics: on-page SEO, blogs and keyword research, social media and backlinks.

Carla covered on-page SEO by discussing how to optimise website content, through using keywords intently without stuffing and taking advantage of product descriptions and alt texts.

She then moved on to the importance of keyword research, showing each business a range of keywords tailored to their company. She discussed how keyword research helps businesses understand what customers are searching for and, with adequate use, can boost Google rankings. She showed a range of free and premium tools that can be used for research.

Carla then discussed how blogs can be a fantastic tool to use for placing keywords into your content to boost rankings. She demonstrated using each individual’s websites, offering blog ideas and keywords to use when they return home.

Towards the end of the first session of the SEO workshop, Carla discussed the importance of social media, using the acronym E-E-A-T: experience, expertise, authority and trust. These are the key points for creating a redeemable social media platform that boosts engagement.

The second session surrounded backlinks, where to find backlinks and how to spot a technical SEO error. The session took an in-depth discussion of the importance of using authoritative and quality backlinks and how to avoid scam and spam backlinks.
